A Warm Face

Palanga, Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic, about 1956. The man is Joseph, a cousin of my paternal Grandfather Vytautas. He's visiting the seaside resort with his wife and granddaughter.

A Closer Look (Part 54)

Palanga, Lithuania, about 1920. This is my paternal Grandfather, Vytautas. He was 26 years old in 1920. Family members referred to Vytautas as "the grey one" because his hair color changed when he was quite young.

We don't have many photos of him in civilian clothing; I would enjoy seeing him wearing that hat.

The Egg Way

The city of Palanga decorates a boulevard with Lithuanian Easter eggs.

"When I was a boy, all the best meat went to Moscow. … We used to say that Lithuania had exploding pigs. After the explosion, only the ears, tail and feet were left."

A guide explains Soviet-era life to a tourist bicycling through the "Baltic backwater."

 

Mom remembers how the Soviets exported Lithuanian products—butter, pork, and geese—to Russia. In turn, trucks labeled "Food for Starving Lithuania" arrived from the Soviet Union. The trucks were filled with watermelons.

Welcome Summer

Palanga, Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic, about 1967. I posted this photo over a year ago. I revive it today because among all of the snapshots,  this one speaks "summer" to me.
