Suburban Chicago, 1965. Mr. Irene's Dad enjoys a cup of coffee.

UPDATE: Mr. Irene's Dad sits in the kitchen of Mr. Irene's boyhood home. Just behind Dad's right shoulder is a door leading to a small utility area and laundry room. The door was a handmade piece created by Dad's cousin, Anthony. Anthony was a skilled artisan and carpenter, and he crafted many furniture pieces for his own home in the Danish modern style. He made the door as a housewarming gift for Mr. Irene's parents in late 1958. Mr. Irene reports that, even as a child, he understood the door was a work of art.

"Monday … I used to enjoy it too, before I was married. But then I only had to do my own undies and summer frocks."

Monday is "Laundry Day."

Toronto Ontario, January 1961. Do you remember when people observed "weekly chore schedules?" Ironing probably fell under Monday's "laundry" tasks.

Camp Irwin, Barstow, California, 1952. Mr. Irene's Dad fondly saved this photo of an Army buddy.

UPDATE: Mr Irene's Dad reports that his buddy is a fellow Chicagoan. The buddy was the "assistant" to the four officers who were in charge of Camp Irwin. In this case, "assistant" meant "valet." This man was responsible for doing the laundry, making beds, scheduling meals and meetings, and general residential cleaning for all four officers. (Mr Irene's Dad emphasized that shoe shining was off the responsibility list.)

Here, the buddy is imitating the instructional style of a certain lieutenant for whom he worked. The cap, overcoat, and long pointer are the lieutenant's: Mr. Irene's Dad and his fellow Privates endured numerous lectures in this style.
