An Occasional Visitor

Kaunas, Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic, about 1973. My Dad's older cousin, Vytas, visits with his niece, Kaunas Nina. Kaunas Nina holds her doggie, Musytė.

Vytas, like his brother Henry, was one of my Dad's older cousins. After Vytas returned to Lithuania from the Siberian Gulag, the regime prohibited him from living in a city. As a result, Vytas could visit Kaunas only occasionally.

After the War, and After More

Before the War

Kaunas, Lithuania, late 1930s. This is my Dad's older cousin, Vytas. The Soviets deported Vytas to Siberia, where he lived in exile for about seventeen years.

A Great Uncle

Kaunas, Lithuania, about 1926. This photo arrived in the "new batch" of images my Kaunas Cousin sent. We initially couldn't identify this man. The image, however, was grouped with members of my side of the family, and in collaboration with our Toronto Cousin, we determined that this is Kazimieras—an older brother of my paternal Grandfather, Vytautas. That makes him my Great Uncle. He resembles other men in the family, and like them, he grayed prematurely.

 
Kazimieras was the father of my Dad's older cousins, Henry and Vytas. That also makes him the Great-Grandfather of my Kaunas Cousin. So yes, my Kaunas Cousin really is a niece to me and my Toronto Cousin. But we like to keep things simple.

We take a break from our exercising.

Near Kaunas, Lithuania, about 1918. My Dad's older cousins, Vytas and Henry, take a break from their horseback ride. We still haven't been able to identify the sisters. My Kaunas Cousin thinks they may be friends of the family. My Toronto Cousin, however, noticed that both girls—and especially the one on the left—share our family's "melancholy eyes."

It was a time when children looked like miniature adults.

I don't know who the girls are, but I assume they're sisters—like the brothers, they wear matching ensembles. Their little, booted feet don't even reach the stirrups. If I learn the girls' identity, then I will update this post.

Henry, at Age Twenty-Six

Kaunas, Lithuania, November 9, 1935. This my Dad's older cousin, Henry. Henry and his younger brother, Vytas, did not flee Lithuania on the eve of the second Soviet occupation in 1944. My Dad corresponded with both men throughout his life.

More Clues

After I posted an early-twentieth-century photo of some relatives, my Toronto Cousin sent me an image of family members from about 1902. Only after I had looked at the photo for a while did I realize that I'd seen it before here. One of the persons in the photo was a well known pastor who was a pioneer of educational reform during the time Tsarist Russia still occupied Lithuania.
