The Older Generation

Seligenstadt, Germany, about 1947. My maternal Grandfather Jake (third from left) stands with group of Displaced Persons at the camp. Jake was in his late forties when he fled Lithuania.

The Traveling Coat

Unknown Location, Germany, Autumn 1944. Mom doesn't recall why she packed two coats when she fled Lithuania in mid-summer. She took only one dress. By the time she and Jake settled in the Displaced Persons camp, the dress was threadbare, and Mom struggled to darn the worn fabric.

On the Big River

Nemunas Delta Region, Panemunė, Lithuania, about 1927. My Mom rides in the dinghy with her Parents, Jadzė and Jake. Horses pull carts along the bridge.

Kaunas, Lithuania, 1936. I recently stumbled upon this snapshot of my Mom's childhood home. Although the house looks quite different today, the original fence still stands.

The House, Later

Kaunas, Lithuania, September 7, 1997. My Mom's friend Joy sent this photo of Mom's childhood home. Mom's parents, Jadzė and Jake, incurred quite a bit of debt building it. It was a wooden structure; the builders put moss between the logs and then plastered the interior walls.

It's nice to see the residents retained the "veranda room."

A Memento from Camp

Kaunas, Lithuania, 1934. My Mom's Dad wasn't the only adult who sketched in my Mom's memento booklet. Mom's maternal Aunt, Dora, wrote, "A remembrance from your aunt. From Aunt Dora."
