Authorized
Buxtehude, Germany, March 28, 1948. This document certified my Dad's role as a Boy-Scout leader at the Schweinfurt Displaced Persons camp. I suspect Dad secured the certification for his travel to the Isarhorn Jamboree.

Camp Memento
* * * * *
Schweinfurt, Germany, 1945 to 1949. This is a "holy card" Dad carried throughout the postwar years. The text printed on the back is not a prayer; it's the lyrics to the Lithuanian Anthem.

A Different Place
Australia, January 14, 1964. My paternal Grandmother, Tatjana, saved this photo of a pair of her relatives who settled in Australia. Many Displaced Persons landed there after World War II.
My Parents initially thought they, too, would settle in Australia. My Mom was reluctant to move there because at the time, Australia did not grant licenses to graduates of foreign medical schools. Mom and Dad therefore waited until they could sail to the United States. Once in Brooklyn, Mom had to wait some time before her diploma arrived from Erlangen. She even hired a lawyer to coordinate the transfer of her medical-school documents.

An Anniversary
Schweinfurt, Germany, May 1948. My Parents married sixty-seven years ago today. That's my paternal Grandmother Tatjana (then fifty-one years old) and my maternal Grandfather Jake (then fifty-two year old) standing with the newlyweds.

Exchanging Portraits (Part 43)
Vienna, Austria, about 1948. Someone painted a portrait of my Dad's friend, Casey, and Casey photographed the painting.

Exchanging Portraits (Part 39)
Kaiserslauten, Germany, June or July 1948. Anthony, a neighbor of Mr. Irene's Dad at the canine security unit, shared this photo as a friendship memento.
On the back of this photo, Anthony wrote, "[Mr. Irene's Dad]! Remember our difficult and good times, as Displaced wanderers, when we either tried to make the best of things or save our homeland; but it now looks like destiny will toss us abroad among different countries. So, [Mr. Irene's Dad], remember me always. Your neighbor, Anthony."

Sixty-Six Years
Schweinfurt, Germany, May 1948. My Parents celebrated their wedding anniversary on May 15 and May 16. They first contracted the marriage in a civil ceremony, and the following day, they sealed the union at a religious rite.
