Relax, you're in the garden.

Near Vilnius, Lithuania, 1922. This is a family friend (or possibly a cousin) of Suzanne—the wife of my Dad's older cousin, Henry.

Thanks to Suzanne's Granddaughter—my Kaunas Cousin—for making this photo available to us.

A Man and his Friend

Kaunas, Lithuania, about 1922. This is Dr. B, another acquaintance of my friend Ron's family. The German-Shepherd dog seems relaxed, even if it wears a peculiar leash. Check out Dr. B's shoes and his white gloves.

Thanks to my friend Ron for making this photo available to us.

Related by Marriage: Church Ladies

St. George's Parish, Bridgeport, Chicago, 1922. A group of first-wavers stands outside the Lithuanian church. Mr. Irene's maternal Grandmother, Anna, is tucked as fifth person from the left—she's the one with the white feathers in her hat! Anna's spinster sister, Petra, is the second person on the right—she has her left hand tucked into her coat.

Although this is a working-class group of women—most of their husbands labored in the stockyards—a couple of the ladies appear to be wearing fur coats (likely karakul).

Another Brother ...

... appears in another passport photo:

Soviet Union, 1922. This is Lev, another of the younger brothers of my paternal Grandmother, Tatjana. I erroneously had assumed that Lev died during the Russian Revolution. I found out recently that, like Volodia, he had made it. We don't know what became of him later.

Garden Party

It's another Chekhov moment on the blog.

Alytus, Lithuania, 1922. Seated from left: my maternal Grandmother, Jadzė; my maternal Grandfather, Jake; Jake's sister (with her fiancé behind her); and two family friends. This photo was taken shortly after my Grandparents married.
