The Best Part about Sundays

Brookfield Zoo, May 1961. I so enjoyed our weekly visits to the Children's Zoo. I'm standing next to the goat pen, but the billys must be in the shed.

Camp season winds down.

Anticipating the start of a new season.

Camp Aušra (later Camp Kretinga), Wasaga Beach, Ontario, Canada, Summer 1959. Participants get reay for another season at the Lithuanian summer camp. Erection of a traditional wooden cross is an old custom.

Camp Grub

Name the game.

Camp Aušra (later Camp Kretinga), Wasaga Beach, Ontario, Canada, Summer 1959. Kadis, the husband of my Dad's twin sister Jonė, oversees another game at the Lithuanian summer camp that I can't identify. Thoughts?

Get ready for the competition.

UPDATE: A reader emails, "It’s a high jump pit not a volleyball net."

Will you get selected for the game?

Panoramic Camp

Camp Aušra (later Camp Kretinga), Wasaga Beach, Ontario, Canada, early 1960s. The children of Displaced Persons who settled in Ontario also contribute to the numbers in the Boomer generation.

If you look back at some of the postwar photos of scouting camps, you'll see that the scenes look very similar to this one.

Don't hog the goats.

Brookfield Zoo, June 1964. There's a line of admirers behind me waiting to pet the goats at the Children's Zoo.

It's Carnevale Eve.

Find a costume and strike a pose. Just don't blow smoke in anyone's face.

Piazza San Marco, Venice, Italy, March 1984. The ten-day party whips up every Venetian. The custom is to wear elaborate costumes and stand frozen, like mannequins, in the Piazza San Marco and in the other campi (there's only one "piazza" in Venice. Lesser Venetian squares are campi).
