The Life Box (Part 6)
Suburban Chicago, 1968. I do the "what-I-did-on-my-summer-vacation" assignment in pictorial form. Daddy saw an otter, and I saw 10,000 chipmunks.

Ignore the Hoary Marmots
Glacier National Park, Montana, July 1970. It looks like I still haven't learned my lesson about keeping my food away from wildlife. Hoary Marmots are pesky scavengers.
"Remember, [marmots] can carry diseases like the plague and may become quite aggressive if they think you have food to offer."

Marmot Interlude
Hoary Marmots are common in Glacier National Park. Think of them as large squirrels or chipmunks. Marmots are crafty pests. They steal food from hikers' knapsacks. They beg for treats. They run off with sandwiches.
Here's a series of shots my Dad took on a 1968 hike. The Marmot was our companion through much of our lunch break. You saw a glimpse of the Marmot in the "Back Country Manners" post.
