Red Squirrel
Lake Nipissing, Ontario, July 1965. My Dad liked to photograph red squirrels because they reminded him of Lithuania. He had no interest in taking snapshots of the brown or grey ones.

The Life Box (Part 17)
In the mid-1970s, I found a tree branch that resembled a perched squirrel. I don't know why I saved it for nearly forty years, but it's an object to which I developed an attachment. Nutty!

Some were young adults, and some were little squirrels.
Schweinfurt, Germany, about 1947. Young and adult scouts appear in this photo. My Dad's twin sister, Jonė, stands fourth from left. The girl on the left holds a flag that appears to have an image of a squirrel, likely the symbol of the Voveraitės.

It's snowing again.
We don't expect to get as much snow, however, as we did during Draco.

"Voveraitės"
"Voveraitė" is the Lithuanian word for "little squirrel." It's also the term used to refer to young girl scouts. Think of "Cub Scouts" and "Brownies."
"Voveraitės" also refers to chanterelle mushrooms.
Schweinfurt, Germany, about 1947. A group of "Voveraitės" from the Displaced Persons camp poses in uniform.
