A damaged image preserves sweet memories.

Kaunas, Lithuania, Winter 1940. I'm often reluctant to post photos that aren't in good shape. I decided to scan this one, however, because it's an image of my Mom—on the far right—and some of her high-school classmates. We don't have many snapshots from that era.

It's always interesting to see people we only think of as older when they were young.

And, in this case, on the verge of such momentous events.

I am only now beginning to imagine my parents as young people.

But then, sometimes I walk by a mirror, and the image I see startles me.

Me, too.

It's really scary.

Also the first time you react to something as an adult and think, "My God, I sound just like Mom/Dad".
