Suzanne with Dahlias


Kaunas, Lithuania, about 1935. Suzanne, the wife of my Dad's cousin Henry, poses with dahlias. The photo is similar to one of Natasha. Dahlias were popular flowers in pre-war Lithuania.

Childhood Garden


Kaunas, Lithuania, about 1935. This is the backyard of my Mom's childhood home. Her Mother, Silvestras, liked to train trees to produce different types of fruit. My Mom remembers, for example, that the apple trees often bore pears.

Erlangen, Germany, 1946 or 1947. Mom contemplates the blossoms. The flowers likely are Dahlias; Mom does not recall that Zinnias grew in Germany.

UPDATE: In the comments, Peter Hoh identifies the flowers as Zinnias, and he points us to the German origins of Zinnias.
