Childhood Garden
Kaunas, Lithuania, about 1935. This is the backyard of my Mom's childhood home. Her Mother, Jadzė, liked to garden. Along both sides of the walkway grew Dahlias ("Jurginai" in Lithuanian—or, "George Flowers"). To the left of the walkway was the vegetable garden, and to its right, Jadzė planted flowers. There also grew a number of grafted fruit trees. Jadzė's father, Silvestras, liked to train trees to produce different types of fruit. My Mom remembers, for example, that the apple trees often bore pears.
