Some Enchanted Evening

People sometimes ask me if my Mom and Dad knew each other when they were children. After all, they grew up in the same small city, and their fathers both were officers in the Lithuanian Army.

My parents knew of each other, but they did not know each other well. Their paths occasionally crossed at events like birthday parties.

Kaunas, Lithuania, 1928. My Mom is the smiling girl in the front row on the far left, holding a doll, and my Dad is the little boy in the front row on the far right, wearing the darker triangular hat and looking upward and off to his left. My Dad's twin sister, Jonė, sits behind my Mom, looking up and over Mom's right shoulder.
