Related by Marriage: A Twist on the Sunday Ritual

Suburban Chicago, Summer 1964. The family changes the routine and spends a Sunday together at Mr. Irene's home. The furnishings identify the house: there's that coffee table, and Skippy's cage is in the corner.

Left to right are Mr. Irene's maternal Grandparents, Stanley and Anna; Mr. Irene on his Dad's lap; Aunt Martha and her husband Wally; and Anna's sister, Petra.

I so enjoy your attention to the history of objects. If your table was maple, I believe that my parents indeed owned a paired higher version. A Marshall Field interior design representative visited soon after our arrival in Palatine. No rugs or living room drapes, little furniture, the chaos of three children age five and under: the rep blanched. He managed only to gasp a word of praise for the tables, and fled.

Thank you! I think it was maple. We used it for many years and then passed it along to another "starting out" couple.

When Mom and Dad redecorated the living room, they shopped at the Merchandise Mart with a decorator. Back then, the Merchandise Mart only sold objects through licensed decorators. Mom (who lives downstairs with us) still has some of that furniture--namely, the dining room set and the bedroom set.
