The Life Box (Part 12)

My Mom and my paternal Grandmother, Tatjana, crafted my first folkdress in 1965. I wore it that year when my Lithuanian School staged an Independence-Day program.

I thought the best component of my folkdress was the "karuna," or "crown." Mom and Baba either thought I was too young for a crown made from sashes or they couldn't get (or afford) sashes for the crown: they used common, fabric-store ribbons to sew the piece.

Mom crocheted around the edges of the ribbon.

Positioned on the back of the crown are the bobby pins we used to secure the piece on my head.

Beautiful work, I can see why they wanted you to keep it.
