Sometimes adults sat at the "children's table."

When my Parents hosted a big party, occasionally there weren't enough seats in the dining room to accommodate all of the guests. The additional guests ate in the kitchen.

I don't recall how the guests sorted themselves out between the two areas; my Mom never used place cards (too American!).

Suburban Chicago, December 31, 1963. The dining room has no more seating, so additional guests have moved into the kitchen. My paternal Grandmother, Tatjana, joins the kitchen group. Look behind Tatjana: you see, there wasn't much counter space in the kitchen.

Suburban Chicago, December 31, 1963. It's not the children's table. It's the spot at which some of the most interesting guests gathered.
