A Milestone Birthday

In 1963, the former Displaced Persons living in our small, suburban enclave gathered to celebrate the milestone birthday of one of the group's patriarchs.

Suburban Chicago, Summer 1963. Everyone looks confused by a gift. Could it be something my Parents bought? Don't miss the plastic-covered chair in the background.

Everyone looks like they are having a good time!

Dad and I would walk over to the U's house occasionally in the evening to visit; it was about four blocks away from our first house in Melrose Park. I called them "Teta" and "Dėdė" (Aunt and Uncle).

I have fond memories of Mr and Mrs U, though not of their first dog "Murzė" (and you know how much I love dogs). Like our neighbor's Chihuahua "Chica", "Murzė" always tried to nip me. "Auksė" the pug, who succeeded "Murzė", was much sweeter.

You were right; this is Mr U's 60th birthday. He was born in 1903, and she in 1909.
