Knitting in the Living Room

When my Parents first bought my childhood home, we "lived" in the living room. Mom and Dad used the living room, of course, to entertain visitors. But we also watched television in the living room and played there. For a while, my crib even stood in the living room. Back then, the downstairs Rec Room was just a play room for the kids.

After the big redecorating makeover, the television set moved downstairs to the Rec Room, and the Rec Room became the place in which we lived out our daily lives. The living room evolved into a space that we glanced at only in passing, on our way from the bedrooms to the kitchen.

Suburban Chicago, October 1961. Mom knits. We still use the coffee and end tables.
