Classmates

Kedainai, Lithuania, May 28, 1932. The girl in the bottom row, on the left, is the Mother of my friend Nijole. The students wear the identifying uniforms typical of that era.

Thanks to my friend Nijole for making this photo available to us.

Uniforms were popular in many countries. Until WWII, all things military were popular.

Of course, Catholic schools were the biggest proponents in the US.

I think a lot of it had to do with a levelling effect if the girls were of different social strata (nobody could show off). Cost was probably also a factor - a couple of uniforms were cheaper than a wardrobe.
