A Closer Look (Part 14)


St. George's Parish, Bridgeport, Chicago, June 1917. This is Mr. Irene's maternal Grandmother, Anna, on her wedding day. How young she was!

In them thar days, a lot of people, probably more girls than guys, got married as soon as puberty hit.

She could easily be 15 or 16.

I just checked with Mr. Irene. Anna was 28 when she married. What's interesting is that she was four years older than her husband, Stanley. That was very unusual for that era.

I remember my Parents, in the 1960s and 1970s, raised eyebrows when a woman married a man even one or two years younger than she.

Still is, I would guess.

You, of course, know the bit about men picking younger women as an instinctive procreation choice.
