PS A guy I worked with almost died trying to walk across them until he was rescued by 2 girls.

How did he try to walk across the Badlands? There are marked trails.
Not sure, IIRC, he tried to do it without a lot of water.
He's a practiced hiker and into nutrition, so he may have been trying to push himself.
