They had a very rough time of it on New Georgia, but later became part of the backbone of MacArthur's forces in New Guinea and the Philippines.
Mr. Irene's Dad served at Camp Irwin in Barstow, California. I don't know whether he was traveling when he visited this location. Perhaps he saw the sign when he was in basic training. We'll ask today.
