"Isn't he nice?"

My Best Friend's maternal Aunt, Mame, met her husband Gino while she traveled in Genoa, Italy. Mame thought Gino's brother, Dolfo, would be a match for one of her sisters, Louise. Mame sent this 1950 photo of herself and Dolfo to Louise. The two stand in front of the Piazza della Vittoria.

Louise later married Dolfo. The couple sailed to the United States on the Andrea Doria. Louise and Dolfo settled in a home situated about three blocks from the house Mame and Gino bought.

Thanks to Louise and Dolfo's daughter—my Best Friend—for making this photo available to us.

Oh I'm so amazed that you knew where the photo was taken... and that you remembered they sailed on the Andrea Doria!! I never realized when my mom told me those stories how adventurous they were in those days.

I noodled around on Google ("arches+Genova") to find the site.

The Andrea Doria story lingered with me because: (1) the subsequent sinking made an impression on me; and (2) later, when I studied piracy, the historical Andrea Doria was someone on whom I focused for a while!

If you're of the 50s, and particularly of the East Coast (born and raised just outside Philadelphia, and my aunt lived just outside Gotham), the Andrea Doria is a familiar name.

Her collision with the Stockholm and subsequent sinking was one of the big stories of the day.
