How much snow must fall before school districts cancel classes?

A regional map.

Chicago is an exceptional pocket. Maybe it's because the city is accustomed to lake-effect snow. Or maybe it's the school district. Or maybe Chicagoans are "flinty."

On the middle and lower East Coast, and particularly around Philadelphia, snow can be very wet, and thus heavy.

It's not uncommon to see people trudging through the snow with umbrellas. If the temperature takes a quick drop, the problem of ice complicates things.
