Toronto,
Ontario, December 1958. My Dad's twin sister, Jonė—on the far left—entertains.
Why did dolls rest on the sofa back? The room was both a public and private space. Jonė and her husband, Kadis, leased their second- and third-story bedrooms to tenants. The couple—and their daughter, my Toronto Cousin—slept in the dining room (here's a photo that shows a bedroom dresser in the dining room).
Early in their marriage, Jonė and Kadis also could not afford to buy artwork, so they hung a family picture in the room. The picture is this portrait of Jonė's Father, Vytautas.
Thanks to my Toronto Cousin for making this photo available to us.
