I'll take a guess and say the family was fairly affluent (although I don't think that was allowed in Stalinist Russia).
Lithuania was not under Soviet control during this time. It was independent between 1918 and 1940. The Soviets controlled it for a year after that, then the Germans. The Soviets secured the country again in 1944.
My history of the Eastern Front is a little hazy, but, now that you mention it, I do remember.My bad.
