Me, too, but I do understand jumping off something into the water.As long as it's deep enough.
This made me nervous because it's a river with many sandbars. Bt I suppose the locals know the safe spots.
Where I am, there used to be a similar spot in the Cuyahoga River (until the politicians dismantled the dams) where kids went bridge-jumping off one particular span because there was a deep, cold pool there.
PS Your caution is well-taken, as anybody who read "Life On The Mississippi" can attest.
