Related by Marriage: A Drive to the Suburbs


Suburban Chicago, Spring 1963. Mr. Irene's Mom wrote on the back of this photo, "A visit from Grandma and Aunt Petra with the Chevy Bel Aire."

And a BelAire or a Ford Fairlane was another sign of having made it.

A good, solid middle class American car.

Interesting Grandma and Aunt Petra are dressing like it's the old country.

The women lived in Marquette Park, a part of Chicago populated by Lithuanian immigrants. Most people there lived as though they were in the old country.
