Door County, Wisconsin, November 1984. When I returned from Venice, I no longer worried about exams, but I spent the next year organizing my research—recorded on 3 by 5-inch note cards. Many nostalgic items (besides the ashtray and cigarettes) appear in this photo: a bottle of "Liquid Paper," an airmail envelope, the inkwell for my Parker fountain pen, a copy of Essential Italian Grammar, a Latin dictionary, and the corduroy pencil case I bought in Venice.
