Related by Marriage: Mr. Irene's First Christmas Tree

Suburban Chicago, December 1959. Mr. Irene's Dad introduces Mr. Irene to the tree. The cubby with the hinged door in the wall behind Mr. Irene's Dad is the mailbox. Mr. Irene's Parents lived in that house—a 900-square-foot home with one bathroom—for forty-four years.

Bet that's a "raised ranch" much like the one I grew up in in Chicago. Our mail slot was horizontal though and, la de da, in the living room closet!

I've stumbled upon your blog and am enjoying it very much. My mother's parents came from Lithuania in the early 1900s to Chicago settling on the SW side. I'm now 63 and your family pictures are just taking me back. Thank you for the memories.

Thanks for visiting! If you search "First Wavers" on this blog, you'll see more about Lithuanians who emigrated in the early 1900s.

Mr. Irene's boyhood home was just a small ranch, not raised. It was built on a crawl space with no basement. It was in Melrose Park. Mr. Irene's Parents moved there after my Father-in-law got a job at Benjamin Moore.

Merry Christmas, new visitor!
