Fresh Fish

Liberty Grove, Door County, Wisconsin, July 1975. Through the mid-1980s, commercial fishermen used the dock at Water's End Road as a departure point for their early-morning expeditions. In the summer, I used to walk to that dock after breakfast to buy whitefish. The dock also was a great spot from which to fish. One year, I pulled in a 36-inch Walleye.

I can remember being awakened in the early morning by the sound ("chug, chug, chug") of the boat engine. And hearing the seagull cries as they followed the boat back after its morning fishing expedition. A favorite Door County memory.

I was sad to see that cool old building get torn down. It was originally used for processing the fish, right?

I remember those sounds, too! They are what usually triggered me to head to the dock.

I think, but I am not sure, that the building was used for processing.
