He also did some mess-hall duty. Mr. Irene's Dad enjoyed working "mess:" he made many friends in the kitchen, and he started to do some serious cooking.
Mr. Irene's Dad makes the best potato pancakes I've ever eaten. That skill probably evolved in Lithuania, not in the U.S. Army. But I'll bet the American G.I.s taught Mr. Irene's Dad a few things about how to fry those pancakes.
