Braids

I've always had baby-fine hair. When I was growing up, my Mom kept my hair cut very short. She believed that my hair would come in thicker if she kept it at a boyish length. My "hairstyle" was so boyish that Mom even took me to a barber for haircuts.

Imagine what that, when added to eye glasses, did for a three-year-old's prospects for assimilation.

Mom did tell me stories about how she used to wear braids when she was a teenager. Shortly before she graduated from high school, Mom cut her hair short and got a permanent wave.
