Ride the Merry-Go-Round.

It won't upset your stomach the way the Tilt-a-Whirl does.

Melrose Park, Illinois, Autumn 1963. I ride the nice, slow-moving carousel at Kiddieland.

I loved that carousel.

My dad went with me on a Tilt-A-Whirl ride exactly once. It was at a carnival at Winston Plaza.

I remember him looking a bit green around the gills as he exited the ride, and I think he barely made it home before he lost his dinner. I only found out years later that he had a weak stomach and that those types of rides always made him queasy.

Was that the same Winston Plaza carnival at which Mr. Irene rode the elephant?

There's also a photo of me riding a pony behind the Jewel Foodstore. It must have been the same carnival.

Your Dad and I are on the same page. I just didn't wait until I got home.

I only remember it because it was the first time I rode the Tilt-A-Whirl. And I only remember going once to a Plaza carnival.

Was it an annual thing, or did they hold it only once?

Remember the tractors at Kiddieland? I loved those, too. And the trains (both the open red and covered green cars).

Mr Kris and I stopped at Kiddieland sometime in the 80's just so I relive my childhood by riding the train. I could barely shoehorn these long legs of mine into the train car.

My dad used to take me to Kiddieland once or twice each summer. He wasn't overweight, but he was at least as tall as I am and a muscular guy. I wonder how he managed to scrunch himself into those cars!

I don't know about the carnival; I'll check with Mr. Irene.

I am sure I have a photo of the Kiddieland tractor ride. I'll dig around for it.

Isn't it strange that we only went to Kiddieland a couple of times each year, yet we lived walking distance from it?
