Sunday dinner at our house was a hot, mid-day meal.
On Sunday evening, we usually ate a light supper. My paternal Grandmother, Tatjana, often served warmed Kaiser rolls or bagels with thinly sliced cheeses and deli meats. The warm rolls were so delicious when the unsalted butter melted through them!
During these light suppers, everyone drank instant coffee. Sometimes it was a decaffeinated product, "Sanka," and sometimes it was just plain instant coffee. Tatjana believed instant coffee—whether caffeinated or not—would not keep us awake at night.
One of my earliest "food memories" is the taste of sugared, instant coffee served with hot milk.
