I Missed the Joke

This photo intrigued me for many years. It's a New Year's Eve party at my childhood home. I posted a few photos of this gathering earlier. Most of the guests are Lithuanians from our suburban enclave; my Dad's twin sister, Jonė, and her husband, Kadis, also sit on the right.

My Mom's best friend, Donna, sits in the center, facing the camera, arm-in-arm with a friend. What is my Mom offering her? And why is everyone laughing?

It looks like it was a charming moment!

Suburban Chicago, December 31, 1961. Everyone is having a good time. My Dad's chair—an extra chair brought in from the kitchen—is empty because he's popped up to capture the moment on film.
