Resilience
British forces bombed Würzburg, Germany, in March 1945. Five thousand civilians died in a firestorm that lasted a few hours. It was a Dresden rehearsal.
Würzburg, Summer 1945. My Dad took this photo of a Würzburg neighborhood a few months after the air raid. World War II had just ended in Europe. Scaffolding shows that reconstruction already was under way. A boy rode a bike, a streetcar ran, and people walked in the shadows of destruction.
